How To Make Your Hair Less Greasy

If you have thin hair and shampoo everyday, you likely may be asking yourself how to make your hair less greasy. Understandably shampooing everyday is tempting, however, any hair expert will advise against this. Shampooing on a daily basis is a huge factor in why your hair is greasy. Shampoo dries out the scalp, so in response, your scalp produces sebum to replace the moisture lost during your shower.

What Is Sebum?

Sebum is a mixture of fatty acids, waxes, and other natural chemicals that protect the skin’s moisture barrier. Sebum not only keeps your scalp moisturized, but it also keeps your hair moisturized too.

You may be asking, “is sebum the same thing as oil?” No, sebum is just one of the many components of oil which also includes sweat, dead skin cells, and tiny particles from the dust floating around you.”

Why It Is Important To Stop Shampooing Everyday

There are many benefits to not washing your hair everyday. Not shampooing everyday helps your hair to maintain natural oils and leads to shinier, healthier hair. It also results in less breakage, less build up, a moisturized scalp, easier styling, and most importantly… less greasy hair!

How To Stop Shampooing Everyday

After reading several articles about the best way to do this I have decided to gradually build up the number of days between washes. The first week, I transitioned to washing my hair every other day. This was a relatively easy transition. My hair was definitely greasy on the second day but it was bearable. No additional products or special care was needed.

Note: Make sure you are using sulphate-free shampoo when you are washing your hair. This will make a massive difference. It is also advised to use shampoo with a pH that is lower than 5.5 for the same purposes.

During the second week I began the transition to two days between washes. On the third day, my scalp was itchy and my hair was greasy from my scalp to halfway down. This called for adding in a clarifying shampoo and scalp scrub to cleanse my scalp. Scalp care is incredibly important to this process and gives you something refreshing to look forward to at the end of day 3. NatureLab. Tokyo’s Clarifying Scrub below was the perfect remedy.

I have just finished the second week and am waiting to transition to 3 days between scrubs. I will update the post later to let you know how that goes! Experts suggest that 2-3 days is a common max number of days for very fine hair so I will experiment and see what works best for my hair type. For other textures, it is possible to extend to 4-7 days. Comment below if you have any suggestions!

1. Cleanser

Cleansing is the first step in a skin care routine. Incorporate an oil cleanser or cleansing lotion for this step of your daily skincare routine for dry skin. Look for products including emollients which remove impurities and smoothen skin and such as glycerin or shea butter which remove impurities and moisturize skin. Glycerin is not only an emollient but is also a humectant, which is a substance that allows the skin to retain moisture.

Experts recommend starting with lukewarm water to open up your pores and then ending with cold water to close your pores, wake you up, and brighten and lighten your complexion. Incorporate this into your shower routine or at the sink.

BUY: Aromatica Rose Cream Cleanser – $16.00 on Amazon (click image below)

This is a cream cleanser with glycerin. Vegan friendly!

BUY: Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil – $48 (click image below)

A 2 in 1 makeup remover and cleanser with the key ingredient camellia oil which is high in oleic acid. This product is super healthy for parched, dry complexions.

2. Toner

Toner is a lightweight liquid that has a consistency similar to water. It can be thought of as a supplement that delivers an extra shot of nutrients, helps other products absorb into the skin, and enhances complexion. Toner is also the second step to remove impurities after cleansing and provides an opportunity to add specific ingredients into your routine that are not included in your other products.

For a skin care routine for dry skin, it is important to use toners that add extra hydration or help create smoother skin. Toners that do this will also help to re-balance your skin’s pH level and moisture following cleansing. Here are some key ingredients to look out for:

  • Alpha and beta hydroxy acids remove dead skin, improve sun damaged skin, and minimize dullness
  • Hyaluronic acid boots hydration, seals in dewiness, and minimizes dullness
  • Rose water and green tea are anti-inflammatory and calm irritation and reduce redness
  • Vitamin E and C fights exposure to free radicals

Ensure that the product you purchase is alcohol-free because alcohol dries out the skin.

BUY: Bolden Skin Brightening Toner – Amazon $19.49 (click image below)

With the active ingredient glycolic acid, this product not only moisturizes as a humectant but also dissolves away dead cells leaving skin looking brighter and more radiant.

3. Serum

Serum is a heavily enriched liquid that is either filled with vitamins or ingredients that address specific skin care concerns. For dry skin, use an antioxidant serum (vitamens E, A, and C) to prevent collagen breakdown for the day. For nighttime, use a retinol serum.

  • Hyaluronic acid to seal in hydration
  • Vitamin C to brighten dull skin and decrease dark spots
  • Retinol, vitamin B3, peptides
  • Colloidal sulfur, niacinamide to calm redness and irritation and improve acne with antimicrobial effects

This is the perfect retinol serum for beginners with dry and sensitive skin.

4. Moisturizer

Moisturizer is the foundation of good skincare and is the one product recommended by dermatologists for every skin type. You will want to have both a daytime and nighttime moisturizer. The daytime moisturizer not only keeps your skin hydrated but it also protects the skin from free radicals and UV damage that you may interact with during the day. Nighttime moisturizers on the other hand focus on repairing the damage you may have picked up from ingredients like retinol to speed cellular turnover and counteract dark spots. Another option is to use one moisturizer for both daytime and nighttime and supplement with additional products like a facial sunscreen or mask.

For dry skin, it is important to use an oil-based option that is heavier than a lotion.

BUY: Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream – $13.53 on Amazon (click image below)

BUY: Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream – $48 at Amazon (click image below)

5. Eye cream

Anti-aging eye cream with retinols are recommended for dry skin to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is beneficial for dark circles, adding plumpness, and glow. Caffeine-infused eye creams help to reduce puffininess as well as Vitamins C and E.

BUY: Origins Ginzing Refreshing Eye Cream – $26 on Amazon (click image below)

This product contains vitamin C and niacinamide to reduce dark circles, depuff, brighten, and hydrate.

Helpful Tips

  • As with any new routine, skincare routines take time to adjust and see the benefits of the routine. It typically takes at least 6 weeks to notice a difference.
  • For multiple concerns, use multiple formulas for different areas. For example, use a vitamin C serum all over and then an anti-microbial for specific acne spots.
  • Don’t mix products. Instead, apply them one at a time.
  • Read the instructions. Allow the recommended time for drying and absorption for each product described on the label before moving to the next step in your routine. Review the label to make sure you are applying products at the correct frequency. Some are recommended once or twice a week, every other day, or every day. Some products may also be recommended for specific morning or evening use.

The Best Shower Routine For Skin and Hair

Showering is an important step in creating healthy, glowing skin and hair. Taking a shower the right way will not only have you feeling squeaky clean but it is also a vital part of your skincare and hair routine.

Showers at this point in your life most likely happen automatically. You get in, you get out without really thinking about what you are doing. But are you really getting clean and doing your best to keep your skin and hair healthy? Are you enjoying the process as much as possible? There is more to showers than you may think and this is your opportunity to really elevate your daily beauty routine to make it truly luxurious.

Discover a shower routine for skin and hair that will transform this daily ritual.

The Perfect Temperature

The first step in your new shower routine for skin and hair is to set the water to the perfect temperature. Showering at the right temperature is incredibly important to keeping your skin healthy, moisturized, and glowing. Although hot showers can feel glorious, especially in the winter, they disrupt your skin’s moisture barrier which affects the look, feel, and health of your skin. This moisture barrier is part of your first line of defense against infection and pollution from the outside world. The perfect temperature for a shower is between 98 – 101 degrees Fahrenheit. 105 degrees or higher is too hot!

Brush Your Hair

Before you step into the shower, brush your hair. Your hair is at its most vulnerable when it is wet and can be easily damaged by brushing. When you brush your hair before showering, you can tackle your biggest tangles while it is in its strongest state. You will also find that untangled locks are significantly easier to wash when they are freshly brushed.

To brush your hair, work in sections from front to back. With your first section, start by using short strokes to brush out the tips of your hair. Once this area is tangle free, move one inch up at a time brushing out the tangles until you reach the roots of your hair. Continue this process until you have finished all sections and your hair is silky smooth. Be gentle and patient as you work. It may take a few minutes but is definitely worth it. The type of brush you use is also important so do your research to make sure you have the best brush for your hair type and purpose. You may want to buy multiple brushes!

Body Wash

Once you have stepped into the shower, the warm water will open your pores to get your skin ready to be washed. After a few moments basking in the warmth, use a wash towel and your favorite soap to gently scrub your body.

This step is just as important to your skin’s health as the shower temperature. The type of soap you use and its pH level is important to maintain your skin’s moisture level. True soaps are fatty acid salts that are very effective at washing away your skin’s sebum and dirt, but they have a high pH of 9-10 which can be harmful to the skin, especially sensitive skin. These soaps are great when you are in serious need of a heavy duty cleanse, think coal miner, but are not best for day to day use. Your skin’s natural pH is around a 5.4 so a soap with a pH level closer to that will be much better tolerated in the shower.

BUY: Purify Natural Body Wash – $23 at Amazon

Should you use a loofah, wash cloth, or your hands? It really is up to personal preference, however, you should be mindful that loofahs and wash clothes harbor bacteria after a single use. Wash clothes and loofahs should be washed or replaced daily. Experts recommend being mindful of using these options to clean your face as they may be too rough. Using your hands is always a great option for your face and your body but should always be cleaned first.

No matter what you use to wash your body, this is your perfect chance to love your body and give yourself a luxurious massage after a long day.

Shampoo

Make sure your hair is fully wet before beginning to shampoo. The warm water will open the cuticles in your hair making it easier to absorb your conditioner later.

Use a dime to quarter-size dollop of shampoo depending on the length of your hair and apply to the roots of your hair. Gently massage it into your scalp using the pads of your fingers. Avoid scrubbing as this is too harsh on the scalp and will tangle your hair. Its also important to avoid circular motions or harsh back and forth movements. Wash your hair like your favorite hairstylist does at the salon and make it an enjoyable experience. For extra love and attention, try using a scalp care product before you shampoo.

The type of shampoo and conditioner you use is important and should be well researched to make sure you have the best brand for your scalp, hair type, and color needs.

BUY: Maui Moisture Shampoo – $6.62 on Amazon

Conditioner

Now add conditioner from the middle to the ends of your hair. Work the conditioner evenly through your hair, spreading it over each strand. Use your fingers to work through tangles as needed until your hair is soft, silky, and tangle free. Let the conditioner sit the recommended amount of time that is listed on the bottle. Letting it sit will ensure that it is fully absorbed by your hair making it shinier and smoother once it is dry.

Wash Your Face

The next step is to wash your face. Pull out your favorite cleanser and use your hands to massage it into your skin. Massage for about 60 seconds avoiding scrubbing. Make sure to wash your neck!

Final Rinse

Your final rinse is key to creating glowing skin and hair. To tighten your pores and close your hair follicles, use cold water for your final rinse. This will help to seal in moisture, especially from the conditioner. Cold water also tightens the appearance of your skin and boosts your circulation leaving you with a healthier, renewed, and refreshed appearance. This is the key to a successful shower routine for skin and hair!

Moisturize

The last step to getting the most out of your shower to create healthy, glowing hair and skin is to moisturize. After gently drying off, apply moisturizer within two minutes. There are two types of moisturizer to consider: humectants and emollients. Humectants are more breathable, are less likely to cause breakouts, and include ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin. These products help to draw water to the surface of the skin.

BUY: Skin Fix Barrier Triple Lipid Peptide Cream – $38 at Amazon

Emollients trap water in the skin, tend to be relatively greasy, and are usually oil-based. These are great options for arms and legs in colder months.

BUY: Dr. Barbara Sturm Anti-Aging Body Cream Unisex Body Cream – $112.90 at Amazon

This is also the time for you to do your full skincare routine for your face and to give your hair one final brush. Remember, your hair is fragile while wet so it is recommended to use detangler when needed and to brush your hair following the aforementioned steps with extra care.

After completing each step of your new shower routine for skin and hair, you will not only feel cleaner than ever but you will also be relaxed and proud of yourself for taking such good care of yourself.

One Of The Best Dresses At The 2022 BAFTAs: Rebel Wilson’s Couture Gown

One of the best dresses at the 2022 BAFTAs was Rebel Wilson’s Gimabattista Valli gown. Wilson was this year’s host at the BAFTAs and the comedic actress impressed with her red carpet fashion and custom Bulgari jewels.

Rebel Wilson’s 2022 BAFTA Gown

The star selected the couture Giambattista gown with her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, because of it’s old-Hollywood look. The gown is strapless and trimmed at the neckline with a wide band of tulle. This look may be overwhelming on some women, however, on Wilson, it was delicate and complimented her slim shoulders.

The gown features a trapeze-cut with a satin bow tie-waste. The bottom half of the gown is three levels of lavish tulle that add soft volume to the look. The dress is dripping in deep blue sequins that are arranged in an intricate design.

A standout from all other gowns on the red carpet, this was one of the best dresses of the 2022 BAFTAs.

The Giambattista Valli 2019 Couture Collection

Rebel Wilson’s dress was originally shown in Giambattista Valli’s spring/summer 2019 couture collection. Giambattista Vali is an Italian designer based in Rome. He shows both ready to wear and Haute couture collections twice a year at Paris Fashion week.

Yves Saint Laurent was the inspiration for the 2019 Spring/Summer collection. The runway of the couture show was filled with tulle, bows, and sequins that were shown on uniquely young silhouettes. Almost every garment was covered with mesmerizing embellishments and embroidery.

One of the best dresses in the collection, Rebel Wilson’s BAFTA gown was a shining example from the show.

Rebel Wilson’s Hair, Makeup, and Jewelry

Wilson’s look was completed by flawless hair, makeup, and mouthwatering accessories.

For her hair, she wore a gorgeous swept back old Hollywood, yet modern up-do. This hairstyle framed her face with a beautifully flowing bang and deep side-part.

Wilson’s neutral makeup was glamorized by thick winged eyeliner and super shiny lip gloss and her cheeks gleamed with a bronzy coral blush.

Wilson wore Bulgari jewelry that included floral-shaped diamond earrings and a huge diamond and sapphire ring. She also carried a black Bulgari clutch from the designer’s accessory line to finalize her red carpet look.

See a close up of these gorgeous Bulgari accessories and the last touches on the look in Wilson’s Instagram video below.

Rebel Wilson’s Take On Fashion

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Wilson said, “I used to be one of those people who thought fashion was frivolous but then, when I learnt more about it, I started to understand the incredible artistry that goes into designing and making clothes – and it really can be exquisite, you admire the creators. Fashion is a creative outlet, and all creativity should be encouraged.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter to me what anyone wears. It matters that you’re a good person. But I do appreciate when someone rocks up wearing a fabulous, well thought-out outfit and stuns – it’s impressive.”

You go, Rebel!

Coconut Oil Hair Mask To Brighten Dull Hair

Looking to add shine back to your hair? And moisturize at the same time? A coconut oil hair mask could be a great option for you!

After months of cold winter weather, many of us are looking forward to Spring, warm weather, and sunshine. Staying inside during the winter often causes our hair to become dull due to a lack of sunlight. While too much sunlight can damage your hair, a small dose each day adds the perfect amount of gleam.

Other causes of dull hair could include using the wrong products for your hair type, overusing chemicals in your hair, and not getting enough nutrients in your diet. Lucky for us all, there are countless ways to get your hair back to its natural shine and glow.

Our hair mask today combines two all-purpose beauty ingredients: coconut oil and apple cider vinegar.

Benefits Of Coconut Oil For Hair

Using coconut oil as a hair mask can help moisturize and seal your hair. Research shows that more than any other natural oil, coconut helps to prevent protein loss. Additionally, applying oil to your hair before and after showering protects it from damage when it is wet (this is when your hair is most vulnerable to damage). Coconut oil can also help prevent sun damage, reduce hair loss, and treat dandruff.

With so many benefits, it makes sense to add coconut oil to your hair care routine.

Benefits Of Apple Cider Vinegar For Hair

Apple cider vinegar benefits the hair and scalp in a whole host of ways. First and foremost, it balances the pH levels of your hair and scalp which in turn closes the hair cuticle and makes your hair smoother, easier to detangle, shinier, and protects it from damage.

On top of this, apple cider vinegar cleanses the scalp by removing product build-up, reducing color-fading, and promotes a healthy scalp with its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.

The Hair Mask Recipe

This is an incredibly simple recipe that will moisturize and deep cleanse your hair.

  • 2 Tbs of coconut oil
  • 1 Tbs of apple cider vinegar

Make sure the coconut oil is in liquid form (heat if necessary) and then combine it in a bowl with the apple cider vinegar. Mix the oil and vinegar together well. You will see beautiful golden bubbles!

When the mixture is cool, apply the mask to dry or damp sections of your hair in sections. Cover your hair with the mixture from root to tip.

Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes, then follow up with a shower and your normal shampoo and conditioner routine.

Hair Mask Results

I was so pleasantly surprised by the immediate results of this hair mask. While brushing my wet hair and looking in the mirror, my hair was visibly brighter and shinier on a whole new level. My hair was easily detangled and only needed a few strokes of the hairbrush. It was incredibly soft and smooth. Softer and smoother than it has been in months. I highly recommend trying out this hair mask. The 10 minutes is highly worth it.

Beauty Trends That Have Lasted Throughout History

We learn beauty trends today from fashion magazines, influencers, and celebrities but many popular looks can date back as far as 6,000 years ago. Some of the biggest trends in beauty originated within ancient civilizations and have evolved over time re-emerging in their modern forms to adorn women all over the world. From winged eyeliner to red lips, these beauty trends have taken over the world time and time again. At this rate, these trends may last forever!

Winged Eyeliner

Winged eyeliner has transcended makeup trend to become a makeup staple. This look has been around since Ancient Egypt. Not only was this a fashion choice, but it was also believed to ward off evil spirits. Upper eyelids were painted using black kohl and lower eyelids were painted using green malachite. The trend also became part of the Geishas’ immaculate makeup routine in the 1800s in Japan.

The modern winged eyeliner or cat-eye re-emerged in the 1920s during ‘Tut-mania’ with the discovery of King Tut’s Tomb which put this style back into public consciousness. In the 1950s liquid eyeliner was invented during the mass commercialization of makeup and the look became a worldwide phenomenon, especially among Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Audrey Hepburn. Today, winged eyeliner is more popular than ever, especially with almond eyes.

Hair Dye

Humans have been changing their looks, making bold statements, and hiding their greys using hair dye since the beginning of time. During the classical period, Roman emperors were famous for dying their hair blonde, Egyptians commonly dyed their hair black using henna, and European tribes dyed their hair different colors to show differences in rank. The first modern hair dye was surprisingly purple! In the 1800s English Chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally created the first synthesized dye while trying to develop a cure for Malaria. The dye was eventually developed into the first hair color formula by the founder of L’Oreal, Eugene Schueller, in 1907. Since then, women and men now have access to every hair color possibility. One of the most famous hair dye trends, platinum blonde, was ignited with the release of the Jean Harlow film, Platinum Blonde.

Painted Nails

Painting nails has long been a symbol of self-care and expression. The history of painted nails originates in India with Henna and then spread to China where it was originally a status symbol among the elite. Like every other beauty trend on the list, painted nails also made an appearance in ancient Egypt on Cleopatra’s hands and eventually arrived in Europe during the Renaissance. Unsurprisingly, coloring and bejeweling hit a high in 18th-century French courts among the likes of Marie Antionette. In 1878, Mary Cobb brought the mani and pedi to the US when she opened the first nail salon in Manhattan. The modern liquid form was developed in France in the 1920s by Michelle Ranard who worked for the company that would become Revlon. Now nail polish can be found in almost every color!

Red Lips

We call red lips timeless for a reason! Red lips first took the fashion world by storm in ancient Mesopotamia where women crushed red rocks into a paste that they applied to their lips. Ancient Egyptians used red beatles to do the same. In the Middle Ages, makeup was frowned upon until Elizabeth I began to rock it as part of her iconic style.

Red lips undeniably make a bold statement and they have carried a variety of cultural meanings depending on the time in history and the region of the world. From high social status to low morality, this makeup trend has seen more ups and downs than any other trend on this list. The modern red lip was repopularized with the suffragist movement in the 20s, became one of the sole makeup products used during WWII, and was part of the bombshell look of the 50s. Today, the red lip seems to make a “return” every season and is a staple on runways and fashion magazines.

Kiss & Smink: The Everything Cream Stick

Kiss & Smink: The Everything is a multi-purpose triple threat cream stick that can be used on your cheeks, lips, and eyes. The stick is a sheer warm coral pink with shimmery golden specks. It is easy-to-use, mistake-proof, and can be applied with or without tools. With so many possibilities for looks this product can create, it could be added to your list of makeup essentials. Check out all the ways this stick can be used to create a warm, spring/summer look!

Cheeks

To apply The Everything stick as blush, draw a line along your cheekbone. Start from the tip of your cheekbone at the outer edge of your eye and finish at the hairline right before your ear. You can use your finger to blend the color into your skin or use a beauty blender or brush. I personally enjoy using a brush to get an even spread and soft look. To create more of a summery look, use your brush to take the color up the side of your face alongside your eye. I’m currently using a matte cream foundation and using this on my cheeks as blush adds a nice dewy look.

Eyes

To use The Everything stick on your eyes, apply the color to your lids. Once again, you can use your finger to blend the color into your skin or you can use an eyeshadow brush to gently pat the product into your lid. You can also use a windshield wiper motion to blend the cream upwards into your crease. Because this is a lighter and brighter color, it can also be paired with darker colors and used as a highlighting option at the corner of your eye or on your bottom lid. This is a great option for almond eyes!

Lips

The lighter shade and shimmers in The Everything stick creates more of a frosted lip look. To tone it down a bit, apply a darker shade of lip gloss on top. You can also pair it with a darker lip liner and use it to create a subtle highlight in the middle of your lips. Use lip gloss to gently blend the two colors together.

All Three!

Create a monochromatic look by using the stick on your cheeks, eyes, and lips all at once!

The Exclusive World of Couture

Couture Fashion Week this January brought its share of lavish clothing. From breath-taking gowns to exquisite street wear with architectural silhouettes, the runways were full of dreamlike and dramatic clothing. Haute couture houses elevate fashion to a whole new level and few ateliers bear this esteemed title. Welcome to the exclusive world of couture.

FILIPPO FIOR / GORUNWAY.COM

History of Haute Couture

The first couture house in Paris was established by Englishman Charles Frederick Worth in 1858. Worth transformed the fashion industry when he elevated the concept of a simple dressmaker by coining the term ‘fashion designer’ as an artist of luxury women’s fashion.

In 1868 requirements were put in place for designers to have to earn the right to label themselves a couture house. These specifications were fully outlined in 1945 as follows:

  • Designs must be made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings
  • Each atelier must have at least 20 members of staff
  • Each season, the couture house must present a collection of at least 35 runs with both daytime and evening wear to the Paris press.

After WWII the couture industry was revived by Dior’s ‘New Look’ collection which featured tight waists, stiff petticoats, and billowing skirts. The collection is the definition of iconic because it essentially ushered in the look that defined the next decade.

In 1966 Yves Saint Laurent launched the first freestanding store in Paris. Soon, other designers followed.

Budget is not relevant for priceless couture garments because there is no limit to the time, money, and skill that goes into each piece.
