1. Cleanser

Cleansing is the first step in a skin care routine. Incorporate an oil cleanser or cleansing lotion for this step of your daily skincare routine for dry skin. Look for products including emollients which remove impurities and smoothen skin and such as glycerin or shea butter which remove impurities and moisturize skin. Glycerin is not only an emollient but is also a humectant, which is a substance that allows the skin to retain moisture.

Experts recommend starting with lukewarm water to open up your pores and then ending with cold water to close your pores, wake you up, and brighten and lighten your complexion. Incorporate this into your shower routine or at the sink.

2. Toner

Toner is a lightweight liquid that has a consistency similar to water. It can be thought of as a supplement that delivers an extra shot of nutrients, helps other products absorb into the skin, and enhances complexion. Toner is also the second step to remove impurities after cleansing and provides an opportunity to add specific ingredients into your routine that are not included in your other products.

For a skin care routine for dry skin, it is important to use toners that add extra hydration or help create smoother skin. Toners that do this will also help to re-balance your skin’s pH level and moisture following cleansing. Here are some key ingredients to look out for:

  • Alpha and beta hydroxy acids remove dead skin, improve sun damaged skin, and minimize dullness
  • Hyaluronic acid boots hydration, seals in dewiness, and minimizes dullness
  • Rose water and green tea are anti-inflammatory and calm irritation and reduce redness
  • Vitamin E and C fights exposure to free radicals

Ensure that the product you purchase is alcohol-free because alcohol dries out the skin.

3. Serum

Serum is a heavily enriched liquid that is either filled with vitamins or ingredients that address specific skin care concerns. For dry skin, use an antioxidant serum (vitamens E, A, and C) to prevent collagen breakdown for the day. For nighttime, use a retinol serum.

  • Hyaluronic acid to seal in hydration
  • Vitamin C to brighten dull skin and decrease dark spots
  • Retinol, vitamin B3, peptides
  • Colloidal sulfur, niacinamide to calm redness and irritation and improve acne with antimicrobial effects

4. Moisturizer

Moisturizer is the foundation of good skincare and is the one product recommended by dermatologists for every skin type. You will want to have both a daytime and nighttime moisturizer. The daytime moisturizer not only keeps your skin hydrated but it also protects the skin from free radicals and UV damage that you may interact with during the day. Nighttime moisturizers on the other hand focus on repairing the damage you may have picked up from ingredients like retinol to speed cellular turnover and counteract dark spots. Another option is to use one moisturizer for both daytime and nighttime and supplement with additional products like a facial sunscreen or mask.

For dry skin, it is important to use an oil-based option that is heavier than a lotion.

5. Eye cream

Helpful Tips

  • As with any new routine, skincare routines take time to adjust and see the benefits of the routine. It typically takes at least 6 weeks to notice a difference.
  • For multiple concerns, use multiple formulas for different areas. For example, use a vitamin C serum all over and then an anti-microbial for specific acne spots.
  • Don’t mix products. Instead, apply them one at a time.
  • Read the instructions. Allow the recommended time for drying and absorption for each product described on the label before moving to the next step in your routine. Review the label to make sure you are applying products at the correct frequency. Some are recommended once or twice a week, every other day, or every day. Some products may also be recommended for specific morning or evening use.

A New Beauty Trend: Scalp Care

About a year ago I discovered scalp care when I used my first scalp scrub. I had noticed product build-up in my hair and had an itchy scalp. I tried several natural shampoos but nothing was giving me the results I wanted. Luckily, I came across my first scalp scrub in my monthly Ipsy Glam Bag. It was the NatureLab. Tokyo Perfect Shine Clarifying Scalp Scrub. This was a revolutionary experience. Imagine getting a scalp massage with a sugar scrub that has soothing essential oils in it. It was euphoric.

After this experience, I was sold. While exploring other scalp scrub products, I realized that I was not alone in my newfound appreciation for this revitalizing experience. Scalp care is quickly becoming one of the biggest new trends in beauty and skincare. And, it turns out that the scalp has huge potential for wellness, specifically in the realm of aromatherapy. Essential oils applied to the scalp can hit your bloodstream quickly. The microbiome of your scalp can play a crucial role in the regulation of sebum and your overall hair health. When unbalanced, it can lead to itchiness, dandruff, and hair loss. So, if you are looking for healthier hair, taking care of your scalp is largely beneficial. Below are some of the best scalp products I have found and am excited to share with you.

NatureLab. Tokyo Perfect Shine Clarifying Scrub

$20 on Amazon – Click the image below

This is a 2-in-1 sugar scrub and shampoo with probiotic-rich sake water. Active ingredients include sake water which is a natural source of probiotics, grape stem cells filled with antioxidants, and pearl extract which unveils an iridescent finish.

The scrub gently removes product buildup and impurities leaving the scalp and hair feeling clean and healthy. It has a gentle almond and violet fragrance that is very enjoyable. The scalp scrub can be used once a week in place of shampoo. I found that the scrub left my hair feeling stripped of moisture. This is easily fixed with a moisturizing conditioner. I incorporated this into my regular hair care routine when I was transitioning away from shampooing everyday.

Gallinee Prebiotic Scalp and Hair Serum

$35 on Amazon – Click picture below

Do you love your face serum? Yes! Then you will love serum for your hair and scalp. Just like face serum, this serum is lightweight and feels barely there. It is enriched with fermented rice water and a special pre and postbiotic complex. Fermented rice water forms a barrier against external damage and allows vitamins to reach the scalp and hair shafts. The serum also includes artichoke extract which preserves the hair’s protective outer shield.

The serum can be used one of two ways: As a spritz after your shower or as a scalp treatment that you massage into the roots of your hair before bed and clean in the morning. I used this product as a spritz. It acted a bit like a detangler and left my hair feeling extra smooth and shiny. I used it for 1 week and noticed overall improvements by the end of the week.

Davines’ Nourishing Hair Royal Jelly Superactive

$64 on Amazon – click the image below

Hair jelly, yes you read that right. This is a super unique product! This jelly is delicious for a dry, thirsty scalp. It not only moisturizes but also helps to rebalance hair follicles. With a “buffet of minerals” including vegetal keratin (amino acids that boost hair resilience), conditioning royal jelly, and exfoliating lactic acid (gets rid of flakes and eliminates build-up), your scalp will be happy and your hair will grow. The jelly is applied with a thin applicator directly onto the scalp after shampooing. It is definitely worth the price for the experience. You will feel instantly cooled and refreshed as soon as it touches your head.

Aromatica Reviving Rose Infusion Cream Cleanser

For the last year, I have subscribed to the monthly Ipsy Glam Bag. For only $15 a month I get to test out all of the latest skincare products and receive several full-sized makeup items (lipstick, eyeliner, eyeshadow palettes, etc.). If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend subscribing. It is such a great deal and is a good way to get exposure to new products before you decide what to buy.

I have received many different facial cleansers in the last few months. I have a small pile of them in a drawer! But by far my absolute favorite so far has been the Aromatica Reviving Rose Infusion Cream Cleanser.

Ingredients

The cleanser is made of a host of plant-derived ingredients, the main being organic Damask rose and Superberry. Damask rose is full of flavonoids that show an ability to fight against UV damage. It also includes vitamin C which helps to produce collagen and elastin, making your skin firmer and more resilient to aging. Superberries are filled with antioxidants that allow the skin to repair and correct visible damage.

Aromatic uses a unique extraction process, called decoction, for active ingredients that helps ensure that all of the plant’s best nutrients go straight into the product and onto your skin.

Out of the Bottle

The cleanser itself is a beautiful bright shimmering pink. If you hold it up to the light it really does sparkle. It has a sweet subtle rose fragrance that is just right. The texture of the cleanser feels more like a lotion. Really! It is creamy, smooth, and creates a luxuriously thick lather.

Onto the Face

The company recommends gently massaging the cleanser into the skin for 1 minute. I tend to go a bit longer because it is so enjoyable. Some cream cleansers leave a residue along with smears of makeup. This cream cleanser does not. It provides a deep clean, without stripping the skin. The dense bubbles remove debris and leave the skin feeling moisturized and lively. I have been using the cleanser for the last week and have noticed my complexion is clearer and my skin feels hydrated (and it’s winter!).
